MCMC initiative to reduce online scam

Effective 1st September 2024, short message service (SMS) from local/international mobile number/sender codes in Malaysia which contain URL link, personal details, phone numbers and/or others will be blocked.

This is in accordance with the directive issued by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia (MCMC) to block all SMS that contains URL link, personal details, phone numbers and/or others as an initiative to reduce online scam.

All SMS with above mentioned contents will be blocked / masked from 1st September 2024 onward.

1. What is the reason for the SMS blocking that has been implemented?

Effective 1st September 2024, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has instructed telcos to block the sending and receiving of SMS with URL link, personal details, phone numbers and/or others to prevent consumers from falling victims to online scams. This block is applicable for SMS sent to or receive from local and international mobile number.

2. Does the blocking of SMS apply when I am abroad or while roaming?
Yes, the blocking of SMS with URL link, personal details, phone numbers and others will take effect even when you are abroad or roaming.

3. Will the recipient be able to receive SMS even though SMS has been sent successfully? Will I be charged?

Despite SMS being sent successfully, the recipient may not receive it. Content of the SMS might be masked / removed. This could happen if the recipient's telecom provider has blocked the SMS due to regulatory requirements, which are beyond our control.

Please be aware that sending SMS may result in charges, even if the SMS is blocked by the recipient's telecom provider.

4. How can I unblock all SMS sent to me?

Currently, there is no option available to unblock SMS that have been blocked to prevent consumers from falling to victims’ online scams.
